FERNS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
A comprehensive guide

A comprehensive guide to the ferns of southern Africa is about to be
brought out through Random House Struik. This volume is a substantial update of Burrows (1990), and is lavishly illustrated with over 1800 photographs, as well as line illustrations and distribution maps.

This book is the first user-friendly guide to the ferns of our region so if
you're a fern fan, this is an essential item for your library. Note, hard
cover copies are only available by pre-order so this is the only chance
to obtain the book in such a format. The deadline for placing hard cover orders is 26 April. click for more info

The Beach Book
by Jeremy Gosnell

This is a delightful pocket-size guide to the common plants
on the dunes and the seaweed of rock pools along the east
coast of South Africa. It will appeal to holiday makers,
people living along the coast and students

Seaweeds: An exciting range covering the Sub-Tidal fringe (below
Low Water Spring Tide), through Lower, Mid and Upper Inter-tidal
zones to High Water Spring Tide. The reproduction and uses of
seaweeds are well covered as is the role of seaweeds in the marine
environment. Commonly found Green, Brown and Red seaweeds
are covered. We have no doubt that one will obtain great pleasure
identifying seaweeds whilst precariously balancing on the edge of a
pool.

The Fore and Rear dune plants section is equally fascinating
and will particularly appeal to folk living just behind the dunes and
battling with rehabilitation and gardening.

A smorgasbord of flora from beach dune to coastal forest.
No excuses now as you feast over the pages covering dune scrub,
grasses, the colourful Marguerite, Vygies, Gazania and so many
more, to creepers and the magnificent coastal aloes & Kniphofia,
shrubs, the renowned Natal Wild Banana (Strelitzia nicolai) and the
hardy coastal trees including the beautiful Coastal Redmilkwood,
the Natal Guarrie and the Lagoon Hibiscus.

Activity Sheet: An additional bonus with this little book are
a selection of Activity Sheets which you will shortly be able to
download and print from www.floratrustkzn.com. There are
three levels : Level 1 for± age 7 years, Level 2 for ± age 10years
and Level 3 for ± age 15 years. The idea is to, at an early age,
encourage awareness, appreciation and the excitement of
identification.

Jerry was ably assisted by all our favourites: Geoff Nicholls,
Tony Abbott, Elsa Pooley & Richard Boon with further invaluable
assistance by Joan Smith, Jane Bertram and Dr Kerry Sink. Dr
Rob Anderson from Dept Agri. Forestry and Fisheries, UCT advised
on the seaweeds. Di Smith once again graciously took care of
the technical editing for us and Jerry's wife, Marilyn Gosnell, an
educator of note, has devised activity sheets for the younger set.
Guy Upfold has done a marvelous job on the layout and quality.
Pinetown Printers did the printing and binding, with Hi-Fi Plastics
supplying the PVC covers.

Details of this book will be loaded to our website as soon as all the
activity sheets are completed. The book therefore is presently only
available from Flora and Fauna Publications Trust – nflora@mweb.co.za – at a cost of R69 + P&P (R12 ordinary mail and
R32 with tracking number per single book).
